Binary Princess – Gets a makeover

1

It’s that time.  It’s a new year, so time to make fresh starts and to attempt to set goals for the next 352 days, until the next new year rolls along.

First things first, give the blog a facelift.  Check!

Next, figure out what you want to do for those 352 days.  Easier said than done.  I want to spend as much time as possible with my husband and kids, I want to travel, I want to try to snow ski, I want to embrace my love for photography, I want to find an apartment that allows Ashlee to go to a great school AND allows my pups, I want to spend more time with friends, I want to tackle Barre classes without needing an oxygen tank and (here’s the selfish one) I want new shoes.

I have a sneaky suspicion that I can do all these and more!  I am looking forward to it!

Why can’t life be boring for once?

1

So again, I fell behind and haven’t written a blog in MONTHS!  I am not a blogger that can write every day, I just don’t know if I have enough to say to be able to write that often.  However, there must be something interesting that has happened since June that was worth while.

But I have been inspired by a friend who has just started her first blog , so I better get writing……

Let’s see, what big things have happened recently?  Matthew turned 17 in September and got his official driver’s license, Christopher is officially a teenager as of October, Ron and I celebrated our 1 year wedding anniversary in October, Ron’s mom sadly passed away, Ron had his gallbladder removed, I had a miscarriage, we moved again, we’ve traveled to Kentucky with friends, we went on a Bahamian cruise, etc etc….  yep, we’ve been busy.  Some good and some not so good, but in general, it’s been BUSY!

It’s been one of those years that has just been full of non-stop craziness.  Ron and I were talking the other night about how insane it has been lately.  All we ask is for a little normalcy.  We want to be bored sitting at home with nothing to do or worry about.  Where we don’t have to truck the kids around to all their activities or have to worry about our health for once.  So how do you get this and is it even possible?

I guess to start we have to set our goals and priorities for what we want to achieve this new year and based on those, that will help get us started on our path.

If you look at some of the issues we faced in 2010, much was centered around health issues.  Not just health issues for us, but for other friends and family as well.  Therefore, I am making it a goal to become more healthy.  Yes, it is a goal almost everyone sets, and then by the 2nd week of January, they have already failed and forgotten it.  It could very well happen with me, but I am going to try my hardest to stay with it.  If I want to make this year a better year, I have to be serious about it.  So, off to the gym we go and less sugary snacks for me.

Another goal is to get more serious about a hobby.  I have been saying this for 2 years and still haven’t made it a priority.  I have a fabulous digital SLR camera and I can barely figure out the settings.  Enough it enough.  Having a hobby can have many advantages.  It’s can be an emotional outlet, a way to grow, a way to relax.  All those can lead to more happiness and a balanced life.

So, if I can get my life centered, with focusing on taking care of me and getting ME focused, then you would think that everything around me can begin to become less crazy or at least it will be easier to deal with.

You would think, right?  It’s worth a shot.  I am ready for a more boring life!  Who would have thought?

I am legitimate!

Ron bought me my very own domain tonight! http://www.careysparks.com is all mine.  That’s right, I am legitimate now.

Reminds me of MC Hammer.  2 Legit 2 Quit!

So now, we have pointed my newly upgraded blog (moved to WordPress) to my new domain.  This means, I will have to blog more often.

I struggle sometimes finding the right topic or I just simply procrastinate.  But now, with my name on the line, I can’t quit.

Not only that, but last April I said I was going to pick up photography as a hobby and look how long it took me to finally just get a camera?  (Ron and I bought the Canon Digital Rebel XSi at the end of December).

So my goal is to use this blog to keep me check, keep me honest!

Ron and I have taken the camera out and have tried out different techniques and just simply trying to figure out all the bells and whistles of the camera.  Just this past week we headed out to Leu Gardens (our very favorite quiet space) and took tons of pictures.

So what is next?  Well, I still want to take some classes at the Crealde School and Ron works with a bunch of photographers, so I plan on picking their brains as well.  I am so excited and plan on sharing my progress here.  It’s a win-win situation.

Do you have a hobby?

At dinner tonight, Ron was playing 20 questions with Ashlee. We enjoy throwing out different questions about all types of topics, whether it is about school, her friends, what she thinks about different issues, etc., all so we can try to get inside her head and see how she thinks. So one of the questions Ron asked, is if she could have any hobby, what would it be?

That got me thinking about how I would answer. I don’t have a hobby. Why don’t I have a hobby? Am I too busy? Is there nothing out there that interests me? What are my choices? I have friends that scrapbook, make jewelry, knit, so what is it that interests me and why haven’t I ever acted on it?

I have always been drawn to photography, specifically nature photography. I can actually remember conversations over the past few years where I have mentioned this in passing and have even said that I should take a class. So why haven’t I ever acted on this?

I do believe having a hobby can actually be healthy for people. It becomes a distraction from the normal every day stresses. It lets you have an escape, lets you blow off steam, lets you reach a different side of you that maybe you don’t normally expose. In my job, I am so focused on details and technical aspects that I don’t get to reach in and use my creative side. It’s like a muscle that isn’t being stretched.

I think it is time that instead of lightly talking about wanting to explore the possibility of photography, I am going to take some action. It is important to be well-rounded, have something that is yours, that you had a hand in creating. By posting this out here to the world, it is going to force some accountability on my end. Feel free to ping me to see where I am in this journey.

Here is my task list to start:

  1. First things first, find a class. Our neighbors told me about some classes at Crealdé School of Art in Winter Park that offers classes for all levels. I will start there and see what they offer.
  2. Second, determine whether I want to go down the digital or film route. I am leaning towards digital.
  3. Third, going to need an camera.

Well, wish me luck! I will keep you posted on my journey into photography!
